Unfortunately bed bugs they have resurfaced in the world after having been nearly eradicated after WW2. Incidences of infestations have grown exponentially in the last several years until today they are very common in Ontario. There is no human physical inspection method that will reliably locate bed bugs in all infestations. Bed bug detection machines are most reliable in single dwelling houses.
How do bed bugs differ from Lice? Lice have to stay on your head to live; bed bugs do not need to stay on the body to live. Head Lice is considered a Medical Issue not a pest control problem.
The adult bed bug is a wingless insect that is flattened from top to bottom it is reddish brown or brown in colour. They are 4-5mm in length. When engorged with blood, its body becomes elongated and swollen, and its colour changes from brown to dull red.
At the beginning of an infestation, bed bugs are likely to be found only in the tufts, seams and folds of mattresses. In advanced infestations bed bugs will harbor in clusters in dark hidden spaces and are generally found closely associated with the bed, frame, bedroom furniture under the bedroom baseboards, window and door moldings, outlets, wall voids, any cracks and crevices, curtains, curtain rods and carpets, furniture such as couches and chairs. They may even be found in cracks in hardwood, and laminate floors and computer equipment. Sometimes a distinct odour is noticed. Bed bugs are very flat and can fit into cracks as tight as 1mm wide!
The life cycle stages of a bed bug are egg, nymph, and adult. The female lay approx. 200 eggs, usually at the rate of 3-4 a day, in cracks and crevices in the floor or bed. Eggs have a sticky coating and stick to objects where they are laid. The eggs are extremely small 1MM in length and white in colour. They are as small as the head on a pin, making them extremely difficult to locate. It usually takes eggs 6-17 days to hatch. Newly hatched bugs begin feeding immediately. They shed their skin 5 times before becoming adults. Beg bugs at all stages of development may live for several weeks to as long as 2 years without feeding depending on temperature.
They feed mainly on human blood by piercing the skin with a long beak and sucking blood into their stomachs. They generally feed at night but if it is hungry and the area in dimly lit, it may feed during the day. If left undisturbed, a full-grown bed bug becomes fully engorged in 3-5 minutes. It has never been proven that bed bugs are disease carriers in Canada.
