Paper Wasps
Introduction
Paper wasps are 3/4 to 1 inch long, slender, narrow-waisted wasps with smoky black wings that are folded lengthwise when at rest. Body coloration varies with species however all are striped with black and either yellow or orange. They are often confused with yellowjackets which are smaller and more blocky in appearance. Yellow jackets also have much larger nests and are more aggressive.
Life Cycle and Habits
Paper wasps are semi-social insects that build small paper like open faced nests. A mature paper wasp nest may have 20 to 30 adults. In late summer, queens stop laying eggs and the colony soon begins to decline. In the fall, mated female offspring of the queen seek overwintering sites. The remainder of the colony does not survive the winter. Nests commonly occur around the home underneath eaves, in or on structures and plants; wasps sometimes attack when the nest is disturbed and each can sting repeatedly.
Pest Service and Control
A technician will come out to your property and do an inspection. Extermination requires a combination of sprays and dust. Paper Wasps are very common in southern Ontario and by the end of summer there may be many nests on one house.
